Worship is a Soul Matter

Worship Is a Soul Matter

Psalm 104 begins and ends with the command, “Bless YHWH, my soul.” Worship begins with the whole person recognising who God is. The Psalmist first declares, “YHWH my God, you are very great.” Before considering what God provides, he establishes that YHWH alone is God and worthy of worship.

The Psalmist then considers creation. God establishes its boundaries, provides water and food, gives creatures their habitats, orders day and night, and provides the conditions in which humans work. Verse 24 interprets what he sees: “In wisdom you made them all.” Worship therefore recognises God’s greatness, rule, wisdom and continuing provision.

Verses 27–30 take the Psalm deeper. All creatures look to God. They receive from his hand, depend upon him for breath and return to dust when life ends. Human beings share this creaturely dependence. Worship is therefore not an activity performed by otherwise independent people. It is the conscious acknowledgement that our whole life is received from God.

This changes the way we worship. We do not gather to make God present or to create a religious experience. We gather as dependent creatures responding to the God who is already present, active and sustaining us. Singing becomes one expression of a much larger response involving trust, obedience, work, repentance and gratitude.

In Jesus Christ, the Creator has made himself known and entered our creaturely condition. Christian worship therefore becomes a whole-life response to God through Christ.

Worship is a soul matter because the whole person recognises: YHWH is God, I am his creature, my life comes from him, and my proper response is to bless him.

Study Questions

  1. What does Psalm 104 reveal about God that gives you reason to worship him even when life is not going as you want?
  2. Where does your life show genuine dependence on God, and where are you still trying to live as though everything depends on you?
  3. Missional: If someone watched the way you live this week, what would show them that you depend on God, and how could that open a conversation about Jesus?
