Church Service Sunday 9:30 AM

Seated with Christ

The church responds from a position God has already given it in Christ. Jesus is the eternal Son who became truly human, obeyed where Adam failed, died for his people and rose bodily. The Father enthroned him above every spiritual and earthly power and appointed him head over all things for the church. Christ now rules as King, intercedes as royal priest, gives gifts and pours out the Holy Spirit.

Through the Spirit, God joins believers to Christ. He makes them alive, raises them and seats them with Christ in the heavenly places. This position is real but ambassadorial: the church remains on earth, represents its King and possesses no throne apart from him. Believers are adopted as God’s children and made co-heirs with Christ. Their present inheritance includes forgiveness, justification, peace with God, access to the Father, the Spirit’s presence, power for service, comfort, hope and a secured future. This inheritance belongs to the whole church and equips its shared life for God’s glory.

The church therefore responds from its position rather than working to earn it. It kneels before God in worship, puts sin to death, practises holiness, love, justice, mercy and reconciliation, and stands before the world in witness. Its present reign is cruciform: it follows the enthroned Lamb through truth, service, patient suffering and faithful testimony, not domination. When society is uncertain, churches are weak and faith feels fragile, hope remains grounded in Christ’s resurrection, enthronement and intercession. The inheritance is present but incomplete. When Christ returns, he will raise his people, remove sin, defeat death, renew creation and reveal their life with him in glory.

Study questions

  1. How should knowing that Christ is enthroned, ruling and interceding change the way the church faces weakness, fear and uncertainty?
  2. If the church obeys from a position already received, what changes should become visible in its worship, holiness, fellowship and care?
  3. Missional: From his throne, Christ has equipped his church with the Spirit, the gospel and gifts for service. How should your congregation move outward with these gifts to particular people and needs in its community?
