Realigning worship to Scripture

Worship is not an experience produced for us but a life of dependence. The majestic LORD has the first and final word. We do not gather to make God present or to have an experience that boosts us like an energy drink. We gather because he reveals his name, gives grace and calls us to confess his rule and submit.

The nursing infant gives worship its proper posture. Its mouth receives life before it speaks. Before worship can be praise, service or mission, it is dependence. Like the heavens that declare God’s glory without words, our need testifies that life is received, not possessed. Dependence is the correct posture of worship. This exposes the illusion that we are self-sufficient and places us where trust can begin.

The God upon whom we depend is neither distant nor careless. The heavens are the intricate work of his fingers, and humanity remains within his mindful care. He crowns us with dignity and entrusts creation to our hands, but this authority is delegated. The crown is not personal glory. Genesis 1–3 shows that when humanity rejects dependence, worship becomes idolatry and stewardship becomes control.

The psalm points us to Jesus. Jesus is the faithful human who wears the crown without stealing God’s glory. Through his suffering, resurrection and reign, he restores humanity to worship and vocation. United to him, we offer our bodies as living sacrifices. Worship therefore continues beyond singing into obedient lives sent on mission with God. We make Jesus known, serve our neighbours, use authority for good, work faithfully and care for creation under the majestic name of the LORD.

Study Questions

  1. Where have you treated worship as an experience meant to strengthen you rather than a dependent response to God?
  2. What authority or responsibility has God entrusted to you, and are you using it for his glory or your own?
  3. Missional: How will your worship continue this week through making Jesus known, serving others or caring for God’s creation?
