Church Service Sunday 9:30 AM

Jesus, our substitute, righteousness and example

Sin has damaged humanity more deeply than we often admit. It has made us guilty before God and distorted the way we think, desire, obey, trust, and discern wisdom. Like Adam and Eve, we are tempted to live independently from God, relying on our own understanding rather than the Father’s Word. For this reason, we needed more than forgiveness. We needed a substitute to bear our sin, an example of true human life, and a righteousness outside ourselves credited to us by grace.

Jesus is that representative, substitute, and righteousness. In the incarnation, the eternal Son took on real human flesh and entered our weakness, temptation, suffering, and death, yet without sin. At his baptism, Jesus stood with sinners, not because he needed repentance, but because he came to fulfil all righteousness. The Father declared him beloved, and the Spirit descended upon him. Then, full of the Holy Spirit, Jesus was led into the wilderness, where he resisted Satan by trusting the Father and standing on the Word of God.

Jesus is the last Adam. Where Adam failed in the garden, Jesus obeyed in the wilderness. Where Adam grasped for independence, Jesus lived in perfect dependence. His righteous life is credited to us by faith; his death bears our guilt; his resurrection gives us life.

Yet Christ’s righteousness does not leave us unchanged. By the sanctifying work of the Holy Spirit, Jesus’ life is now being formed in us. We are called to pray before we move, listen before we act, reject mere human wisdom, depend on the Father, walk by the Spirit, and remain in Christ.
